My Answer to Flamborough/Dundas Today’s Question About “Hate”Crimes

Having solicited candidates’ opinion, the snotty Flamborough and Dundas Today publications don’t even promise to print the responses:

Responses must not exceed 250 words so we can include and format all submissions  Responses will be edited for length and content will be reviewed for editorial standards, and will be published at the editor’s discretion. “

Hamilton police have reported a rising trend in hate- or bias-motivated crime in the city, with the brunt of those incidents occurring against our racialized, faith-based, newcomer and LGBTQ2S communities. What will you do to support our most vulnerable communities and make life safer for them specifically?

All too often “hate crimes” are not crimes at all. The numbers are goosed up by including graffiti or rude remarks or offensive posters or postings on the internet. Of course, violence or property damage should be investigated and punished. “Hate” is a loose term that usually means an opinion the accuser hates.

In August Andrea Horwath the the Hamilton police made clowns of themselves. They contacted venues and urged them not to rent space for a convention organized by the Dominion Society, which opposes mass demography changing immigration. Talk about “hate” was in the air. There was no hate, just a different opinion. The mayor even refused to rent city space — paid for by ALL of us to the DS. The end result. Burlington go the venue rental, the hotel rooms and meals. Good show, Andrea. Oh, yes, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is taking the city and police to court for violating the DS’s free speech rights. This will cost the taxpayer even more.

As I said in a press release at the time: “Leave free speech alone, Andrea. Fix the roads!”
