Answers to Issue Questions Posed By Melissa Dowdall

Dear Ms Dowdall:

Here are my answers to your questions:

. What is your opinion on AI Data Centres and the development of an AI Data Centre in Hamilton? If elected, how will you advocate for municipal bylaws to protect the local environment and the quality of life of local residents? There may be a case for AI data centres away from large areas of population. I am opposed to locating such a centre within the City of Hamilton.

2. The soot and emissions from various industries and factories are affecting air quality, respiratory health, and quality of life of Hamilton residents. Factories are continually being granted exceptions to exceed the recommended limit of various pollutants emitted into the atmosphere. If elected, what specific actions will you take to advocate for Hamilton residents, beyond demanding an apology from the offending industries or asking residents to report findings?I would be reluctant to grant such exemptions.

3. What does reconciliation mean to you in the context of municipal government, and what role do you believe the City of Hamilton has in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples? If elected, what specific commitments will you make to advancing Indigenous Relations, Reconciliation, and the City’s Urban Indigenous Strategy during your term as Mayor?True reconciliation means treating everybody fairly. Equal treatment for all; special privileges for none.

4. Affordable housing is an important issue in Hamilton. At the same time, the city owns several plots of land that could be rezoned to allow for affordable housing to be built, such as at 70 Hope Avenue in Ward 4. If elected, how will you work to ensure the development of affordable housing for low-income residents on municipal land?Using available and suitable city land for affordable housing is a good and practical idea, but not the whole solution. In 2014, in an orgy of virtue signalling, Hamilton declared itself a sanctuary city. That means assisting illegals. Hamilton has a homeless crisis. Illegals should not be housed in taxpayers’ facilities. These spaces should go to our own poor and homeless.

5. The residents of the Parkdale  neighbourhood in Ward 4 have experienced 2 serious floods due to water main breaks within the past 8 years. The pipes, dating back to the 1800s, are patched instead of replaced, and residents given money to cover damages while their home insurance rates skyrocket. If elected, what will you do to advance long overdue infrastructure updates to Hamilton’s water main system? The city’s budget must be pared of unnecessary spending — grants to special interest groups, for instance. On the other hand, upkeep of infrastructure — sewers, roads — should be a top priority.

6. Hamilton residents regularly face incidents of racism and hate crimes, and hate groups have actively worked to rally members here. If elected, what specific actions will you take to actively resist and confront racism, discrimination, and oppression in Hamilton?City Council should not attempt to censor political opinion. “Hate” is a loaded term thrown around by people who wish to restrict or control others. “Hate groups”? Have any groups been charged under Sec. 319 of the Criminal Code. The slightest critical opinion targetting certain privileged groups is often dubbed a “hate crime.” No crime there, just an opinion.I believe in free speech. If I might quote Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, who incidentally, appointed the first woman to cabinet, a Hamiltonian, the Hon.  Ellen Fairclough:  “I am Canadian, a free Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship God in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, free to choose those who govern my country.””Free to speak without fear.” This country is gripped with fear of expressing a political opinion. People fear losing  their jobs. The current Mayor and the city police tried to pressure meeting venues this past August not to rent to a group critical of immigration. At the time, I thought it was Cuba North, without the palm trees.

7. Did you use AI in the production of your answers to my questions?
I did not. I’m a technopeasant. I wouldn’t know how, even if I wanted to.Here’s my campaign song from the talented folks who are helping me.
